Stage 1
Initial employer enquiry
Share hazard, exposure-group, workforce, site and scheduling information. No employee medical data is needed.
A transparent process
A useful programme connects the risk assessment, worker experience, clinical interpretation, employer action and future recall.
Stage 1
Share hazard, exposure-group, workforce, site and scheduling information. No employee medical data is needed.
Stage 2
Check what the risk assessment says, which regulations may apply and whether higher-hazard medical surveillance needs a specific route.
Stage 3
Define suitable assessment methods, inclusion criteria, competent roles, reporting and escalation.
Stage 4
Plan sites, shifts, appointment lengths, employee information, consent and suitable assessment space.
Stage 5
Complete the indicated checks in an appropriate environment with quality controls and confidentiality.
Stage 6
Interpret findings, communicate with the employee and arrange proportionate escalation or referral.
Stage 7
Provide work-relevant outcomes, highlight programme actions and plan future reviews based on the applicable schedule.
Not a one-off exercise
Surveillance findings can indicate that the risk assessment or exposure controls need review. The programme should also account for new starters, role changes, missed appointments and workers who report symptoms between planned recalls.
