Risk-led workplace health surveillance Employee guidance

Employee guidance

Your assessment, your information, and what happens next.

Health surveillance is connected to a workplace exposure. You should understand why you have been invited, what the assessment involves and what information may be reported.

01

Before

Read the appointment information and follow any preparation instructions.

02

At the assessment

Ask questions, provide relevant information and complete the appropriate checks.

03

Outcome

The result is interpreted and explained through the agreed clinical process.

04

Next step

You may return to routine recall or be offered further assessment and advice.

How to prepare

  • Bring glasses, hearing aids or relevant medication information if the appointment instructions ask for them.
  • Follow any guidance about noise exposure, inhalers, smoking, meals or strenuous exercise before a test.
  • Be ready to discuss the tasks you carry out and any relevant symptoms.
  • Tell the assessor if you need communication support, an adjustment or clarification.

Consent and confidentiality

The purpose of the assessment and the reporting route should be explained. Medical information is confidential. The employer receives the information needed to manage the work-related risk, not unrestricted access to your medical record.

If further assessment is recommended

A concern does not automatically mean a diagnosis or that you are unfit for work. It may mean that more information, a clinical review, a referral or a change to workplace controls is appropriate.

Employee FAQs

Questions about privacy and process.

Why has my employer asked me to attend?

Your role may involve exposure to a workplace hazard for which risk-led health surveillance is appropriate. Ask your employer which risk and programme the appointment relates to.

Will my employer see everything I say?

No. Clinical information is handled in medical confidence. Your employer receives an appropriate work-related outcome, and the reporting process should be explained to you.

What if I am worried about a symptom?

Raise it through the programme’s stated route promptly rather than waiting for a future recall. For urgent or general medical concerns, use the appropriate NHS or emergency service.
